Who We Are
Mission: To implement and manage strategic programs to prevent homelessness for singles and families in Berrien County and also provide support and resources to ensure that each member of our community reaches their highest level of self-sufficiency.
Emergency Shelter Services, Inc. (ESS) is a nonprofit that services the homeless and those experiencing housing instability. We are the only family shelter in the county. Every night, we provide 28 beds to families across Berrien County, MI. Our various programs and support help the residents of Berrien County get back on their feet, creating hope for a better future.
What We Do
We provide targeted programs and services to prevent homelessness as well as emergency short-term housing for families and single women; referrals and vouchers for long-term housing; career, financial, and life-skill counseling and on-going support and follow-up. We are committed to each adult and child that walks through our door.
Our services:
- The Family Shelter has been the heart of Emergency Shelter Services (ESS) for 40 years. It provides temporary housing, where individuals experiencing homelessness can stay while receiving supportive services. Our goal is to help them develop necessary life skills, and find them permanent housing.
- The Connection provides the support and resources needed to ensure that each member of our community reaches their highest level of self-sufficiency.
- The ESS 6° Resale Store finds a second home for gently used goods with proceeds from each sale supporting the functions of the shelter and our clients.
