The mission of Neighbors Organizing Against Racism is to dismantle systemic racism by empowering communities through education, advocacy, and action. NOAR strives to create a society where racial equity is the norm, and all individuals, regardless of race or background, have the opportunity to thrive. Central to NOAR’s mission is the belief that communities can drive change when they are informed, united, and equipped with the tools to confront and dismantle racism in all its forms.
What We Do
NOAR remains deeply embedded in the Benton Harbor
community and continues to expand its reach and influence across Michigan. The organization’s current activities are focused on both long-term and immediate impacts:
1. Annual Easter Egg Hunt: The Easter Egg Hunt continues to be a highlight of NOAR’s community activities. By providing children with over 50 bicycles and creating a day of joy and unity, this event fosters positive community relations and ensures that every child, regardless of background, has the chance to participate in the fun and receive valuable gifts.
2. The June Woods Project: One of NOAR’s proudest accomplishments is the successful renaming of a
local park in honor of June Woods, a formerly enslaved man. This initiative has brought to light the often-forgotten contributions of Black individuals in the area’s history and serves as a lasting reminder of the power of community action.
3. Protect Yourself: COVID Vaccine Hesitancy Project: NOAR’s Protect Yourself campaign was vital in educating the community during the pandemic. By providing accurate information and addressing concerns around vaccines, the project helped protect the health of vulnerable populations and increased vaccine uptake.
4. Black Health Matters: Through workshops, informational campaigns, and resource distribution, NOAR’s Black Health Matters initiative continues to empower Black individuals to take control of their health, addressing health disparities and encouraging preventative care.
5. Michigan Black Summit: The Michigan Black Summit, an annual event organized by NOAR, brings together leaders, activists, and community members to discuss issues such as Black leadership, economic empowerment, and environmental justice. The Summit has become a key platform for driving
statewide conversations and actions that impact Black communities. Through its commitment to racial justice, health equity, and community empowerment, NOAR remains a vital force for change, ensuring that the voices of marginalized communities are heard and their needs addressed.
