Who We Are

Mission:

The Mission of the African American History and Literature Gallery is to engage diverse communities in the appreciation of the African American experience through the arts, history and culture all while promoting differences in unity.

To raise public art in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in southwest Michigan.

The Unified Civic Monuments project is a grassroots collaboration of community minded people and organizations. This project is led by the founders of the African American History & Literature Gallery, with the support of Krasl Art Center, Lake Michigan College, the BH/SJ Arts & Culture Social Justice Group, and the cities of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph.

What We Do

The Gallery’s vision is to be an integral asset of the Twin Cities’ backdrop that makes a significant impact on visitors’ lives and understanding as they experience the stories of people of African descent.  The Gallery is located in Benton Harbor, and its collections include books, magazines, memorabilia, paintings, prints, and other culturally relevant artifacts.  The programs include opportunities for teachers and the community to study and conduct research, for families to participate in fun learning activities, and for adults to participate in meaningful fireside chats.  The Gallery also conducts tours for school groups, youth programs, and community organizations, as well as tourist groups from outside the Twin Cities area.

Unified Civic Monuments Project:
Throughout the United States, communities – including our own – face a painful conflict. We prize equality and love, and yet injustice continues to oppress our brothers and sisters because of the color of their skin.

Change starts locally, in the heart of a single person, a single community. Now is the time to unite; not by the color of our skin, but by the content of our hearts. Now is the time to let justice ring. Now is the time to set ourselves free.

To solidify our intent, help us erect monuments in both St. Joseph and Benton Harbor. This public art will honor the influence and strength of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and remind us of the value of all humanity.
