Since September 30, 2021, Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency (SMCAA) has been providing bottled water to the residents of the City of Benton Harbor following reports of elevated levels of lead in the city-supplied water. The State of Michigan is providing free bottled water as City residents are being encouraged to use bottled water for cooking, drinking, brushing teeth, rinsing foods, and mixing powdered infant formula.
It is SMCAA’s belief that clean water is vital to the health of communities and that everyone has the right to safe, clean water. Through your willingness to volunteer at this distribution, SMCAA will be able to assist 200-400 City households with clean water. So, first and foremost, THANK YOU! Without your volunteerism, Community Action would not be able to fulfill this critical need to the residents of the City of Benton Harbor.
The distribution you are registering for will be at the SMCAA Warehouse: 331 Miller Street, Benton Harbor, MI 49022.
Your scheduled shift is on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 from 2:30pm to 6:30pm. (Note that the distribution will run from 3:00pm to 6:00pm, so you may be done before 6:30pm.)
When you arrive, there will most likely already be a line of cars awaiting distribution. Please pass-by these clients’ vehicles, turn onto Miller Street, and a SMCAA staff member will direct you to where to park. Do not get in line behind the clients’ vehicles.
Once parked, please come into the warehouse through the open garage door under the SMCAA sign. Inside there will be a sign-in sheet. Once you sign-in, an SMCAA staff person will give you further instructions.
Important Notes:
- This distribution event is outdoors, rain or shine. Please dress accordingly.
- Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, SMCAA hosts distributions in a “drive-thru” format. Residents are asked to remain in their cars, so volunteers will not come face-to-face with others.
- This is a very physical volunteer request. 24-packs of water bottles are being distributed which are heavy. If you have physical limitations, please note this and we will place you in traffic control or registration of participants.
If you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email Ashley at aslack@smcaa.com or call me directly at 269-925-9077 ext. 864.
We at SMCAA are SO appreciative of each and every one of you. Your willingness to share your time and energy means the world to our agency, staff members, and clients. SMCAA is dedicated to empowering diverse people in need and supporting their journey towards economic security. Thank you for helping make our mission possible!
