Who We Are
Mission: We are people with disabilities advancing justice, access, and inclusion for the Disability Community.
Disability Network Southwest Michigan (DNSWM) serves as a resource and advocate for people with disabilities across eight counties in Southwest Michigan. As a disability rights organization, DNSWM works to protect civil and human rights, promote equal opportunities, and foster self-determination. Led by individuals with disabilities, the organization is committed to building inclusive communities where everyone can fully participate in everyday life.
Founded in 1981 by a small group of disability advocates, Disability Network Southwest Michigan educates and connects people with disabilities to the community resources they need to live independently while advocating social change. Much of our advocacy work is focused on creating communities that value disability as human diversity, free of attitudinal barriers, where all people benefit with full access and inclusion.
We are a nationally recognized Center for Independent Living; this distinction makes us unique from other community based nonprofit organizations. We believe that people with disabilities know best the disability experience; therefore, at least 51% of our staff and Board of Directors are people with disabilities. We provide cross-disability services to people of all ages, empowering customers to set and achieve their own goals, ensuring they can thrive at home, work, and in their communities.
What We Do
DNSWM is your trusted partner in providing exceptional services across Southwest Michigan. We empower individuals with disabilities across Southwest Michigan to achieve independence and inclusion in their communities. Our services focus on five core areas: Information & Referral, Advocacy, Peer Support, Independent Living Services, and Transition. Examples include helping individuals transition from nursing facilities to community living, building ramps for accessibility, advocating for accessible housing and transportation, and preparing youth for post-secondary opportunities like employment or college.
Additionally, we work with organizations, businesses, and government agencies to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) through workshops, training, and technical assistance. Our efforts promote a welcoming environment for people with disabilities as customers, employees, and community members.
